This rare American-French gimmel ring features the names inscription Isaac F. Stockton to Mary S. (?) Peacock

October 17th 1839. What makes this ring even more rare is the fact that it was commissioned in New Orleans during the same time Marie Laveau would have been wandering the same streets as Isaac and Mary. What if Mary visited her one day? Did they shake hands? Did they unknowingly pass by eachother on the pavements of Bourbon Street? Or perhaps they were just relishing the same sunlight during the same early-Victorian era? It’s exciting to even think of what this ring may have witnessed in 1839.

Gimmel rings were primarily popular in France; however, as there were many French natives in Louisiana at the time, it’s likely that a French goldsmith brought this unique style to American soil and as a result crafted it for the wedded couple.
