This French gimmel ring was crafted in the 1700s in 18k gold and features the name of a wedded spouse. On one interlocking band the inscription “M.G. maries le 23 May 1793” is engraved, translating to indicate that M.G. was married on May 23rd, 1793. M.G. would have worn this as a wedding band throughout the rest of their life.

Usually two names are inscribed on a gimmel ring, so this makes the ring a bit more unique to have just one name initialed. Amazingly, this ring was dated just one week prior to the insurrection of May 31st - June 2nd 1793 during the French Revolution (before Napoleon came to power—an important insurrection listed in the top 3 of all time). This is also the year of the Reign of Terror in France; therefore, this wedded spouse lived in a series of important and dark events in history to follow a newly married life.

Gimmel rings, often referred to as “secret” wedding rings, were crafted in the 1700s and 1800s and worn as wedding rings in France. They feature the names of a wedded husband and wife that’s hidden in a puzzle contraption (gimmel). These rings have become increasingly scarce and are harder to find, especially so for being created in the 1700s and shrouded in a very rich history!
